» 2018 Jeep Wrangler production ending to make way for Jeep pickup
Mar 18, 2018 - 12:03 AM - by Jimmyb

Jeep Wrangler Ute OzAfter more than a decade in production, the outgoing JK generation Jeep Wrangler is set to end production on April 7. According to Automotive News, parts supplier Hyundai Mobis North America notified the State of Ohio that production was ending.

The Toledo, Ohio, plant where the Jeep is built is already deep into production of the replacement JL generation Wrangler. The big news isn't that JK production is ending but that the plant is retooling in order to get Wrangler pickup production underway.

Details on the Wrangler pickup are scarce. Jeep hasn't said anything, so most of what we know comes from various spy shots. Basically, expect a JL Wrangler Unlimited with a bed. That's a good thing. We were quite smitten with the Wrangler when we drove it late last year. It's better equipped and more refined than ever.

» The truth about the 2018 JL Wrangler
Mar 18, 2018 - 12:03 AM - by Jimmyb

2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Exterior AccessoriesJeep crows about its Wrangler being the standard for off-road driving. As my colleague Andrew Ganz found in Arizona, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is a dynamite car in the dirt.

While the 2018 Wrangler, a JL to all the fans, certainly will be a fixture on trails and in mud bogs, it's also the vehicle that will get plenty of folks to school and work without ever setting a tire off road. The Wrangler will be a grocery getter, a commuter car, and in 4-door trim, perhaps the most capable method of getting the kids to soccer practice this side of a Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, or Toyota Land Cruiser.

To find out how the 2018 Wrangler improved for those daily commuters, I borrowed a Rubicon Unlimited with a 6-speed manual and 3.6-liter V-6—easily the most enthusiast-focused member of the Wrangler family—and put 267 miles of commuter-class travel on it.

The Good: The new Wrangler takes so much from its World War II

» 2019 Jeep Cherokee Review
Mar 18, 2018 - 12:02 AM - by Jimmyb

2019 Jeep Cherokee ReviewThe 2019 Jeep Cherokee gets more conventional styling this year and adds a powerful turbo-4 engine. It retains its off-road prowess, especially in the Trailhawk model, and it’s comfortable on pavement too.

Interior room is an issue even though interior materials are not. Crash-test results are less than stellar, though Jeep makes plenty of active safety features available.

In addition to Trailhawk, Jeep offers the Cherokee in Latitude, Latitude Plus, Limited, and Overland trims. We rate it a 6.2 out of 10. (Read more about how we rate cars.) The Cherokee made its debut for the 2014 model year and it is updated for 2019 with new styling, a new engine, an updated infotainment system, and revised transmission and suspension tuning.

The Cherokee’s new looks do away with the oddball six-eyed look of the previous model and bring the lighting together where it’s supposed to be. The headlights are now LEDs with integrated daytime running

» Jeep Teases Concept Vehicles for 2018 Easter Jeep Safari
Mar 18, 2018 - 12:02 AM - by Jimmyb

Jeep Teases Concept Vehicles for 2018 Easter Jeep SafariWe’re just a couple weeks away from the 2018 Easter Jeep Safari, which begins March 24 in Moab and coincides with the tail end of the 2018 Jp Dirt ‘N Drive Presented by Jeep.

And the company behind the seven-slat grille is getting ready for the event in fine fashion: by teasing its new concepts that will debut among Utah’s red rocks.

Two of the concepts, teased yesterday, look like they’ll hearken back to Jeep’s glory days of the 1960s and 1970s, when off-roading as a hobby was just beginning to take off. The concepts are clearly based on the all-new 2018 Wrangler JL, each with a distinctly retro vibe.

The first illustration—by design legend Chris Piscitelli—shows a Wrangler JL, seemingly tearing across a desert landscape with a cloud of dust in tow.

It’s hard to see what will make this concept stand out from a stock Wrangler, although we

» SPIED: Images of 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Body Shell Surface
Aug 23, 2017 - 9:57 PM - by Jimmyb
SPIED: Images of 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Body Shell SurfaceWe were treated to a distinctly clandestine-feeling look at the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL today, as one photographer captured these images of two different bodies-in-white covered up.

While we’ve seen renderings and leaked images of the new Wrangler before, these photos prove a few things about the SUV’s evolutionary new design.

First, the sculpted fender vent is immediately noticeable. Photos of the vehicle without attached fenders seem to suggest the vent will be purely cosmetic, as it doesn’t look like it leads to any kind of engine bay heat extractor or intake. Nestled just aft of the vent will be a prominent “Trail Rated 4x4” badge, a neat signature that Jeep reserves for its best off-roaders.

Spotted on the rear end of one of the bodies is the Wrangler’s new door handle design, oriented vertically here for the side-swinging tailgate.

» New 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Spotted on Rubicon Trail
Aug 23, 2017 - 9:56 PM - by Jimmyb
Jeep JL Wrangler spy shotsThe 2018 Wrangler JL models have been spotted test-running the Rubicon Trail!

A video posted to JL Wrangler Forums shows the two- and four-door JL Jeeps crawling down the Rubicon, a trail well-known to Jeep enthusiasts. Though the Wranglers are still heavily camouflaged, we can see how they look with some dust and dirt on the tires.

Until now the majority of spy photographs have caught the JL on pavement. This is a rare opportunity to see testing taking place in an environment where Jeep owners are likely to play with their machines: rocky trails.

Earlier this week, we got the first unwrapped peek at the JL in its birthplace in Toledo, Ohio, where we got confirmation of the enhanced windshield aerodynamics, fender flare styling, and vented hood. Other recent leaks include a dealer order form, and various views of the JL from the interior to the undercarriage.

» The End Is Nigh Great Wall Motors Confirms Intent to Purchase Jeep Brand
Aug 23, 2017 - 9:56 PM - by Jimmyb
The End Is Nigh Great Wall Motors Confirms Intent to Purchase Jeep BrandWe have heard whispers in the past weeks that Chinese automakers were vying to purchase Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).

Automotive News reports today that Great Wall Motor Company has confirmed its intent to purchase the Jeep brand separately.

In the past weeks, Automotive News reported meetings in China between FCA executives, Donfeng Motor Group, Geely Automotive Holdings, and Guangzhou Automobile Group. FCA stated last week that an offer from an unknown Chinese automaker was rejected, but no details were released.

This follows earlier reports that the Jeep brand is worth more than all of Fiat Chrysler combined, with Jeep sales expected to make up nearly half of FCA’s sales by 2018.

In an email from Wang Fengying, president of Great Wall, Automotive News learned Great Wall is “connecting with FCA” to

» YouTuber gets early test drive of Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk
May 25, 2017 - 1:00 AM - by Jimmyb
Jeep’s 707-horsepower Grand Cherokee Trackhawk Jeep’s 707-horsepower Grand Cherokee Trackhawk won’t be muscling its way into showrooms until the fourth quarter of the year, but one lucky YouTuber has managed to spend some time behind the wheel.

This video comes from the YouTube channel Sinister Life and features a pre-production vehicle with a right-hand drive configuration. For whatever reason, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles engineer testing the vehicle allowed someone from the channel to hop behind the wheel.

We should stress that since it’s a pre-production vehicle, its performance doesn’t constitute what buyers can expect in the final production version. For example, the vehicle is clocked at 3.8 seconds for the 0-60 mph run. Jeep’s official numbers include a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, a quarter mile time of 11.6 seconds, and a top speed of 180 mph, and we aren't about to argue with them.

Based on the comments in

» 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Interior Revealed
May 25, 2017 - 12:56 AM - by Jimmyb
2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Interior RevealedWe don’t have to tell you that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL is one of the most anticipated SUVs coming out within the next few years.

The standard-bearer of the brand is the bread-and-butter of a huge segment of the aftermarket and far and away the top choice for off-road enthusiasts among new models.

We’ve already established that the exterior is going to be an evolutionary step from the JK, retaining most of its signature styling cues, while subtly tweaking certain details.

The interior shows relatively more extensive changes. However, nothing we find is especially shocking or controversial. The last major interior refresh the JK received was in 2011, in which the blocky, hard plastic dash was overhauled with a more sculpted design.

In some regards, the JL interior is a move back to a more angular theme, with a relatively flat dash punctuated by raised round

» Jeep Wrangler-based pickup spotted roaming on public roads in Detriot
May 25, 2017 - 12:56 AM - by Jimmyb
2018 Jeep Wrangler-based pickup spotted roaming on public roads in DetriotDETROIT -- Spy photographers have captured the first public images of Fiat Chrysler's upcoming midsize pickup based on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

The photos indicate that the as-yet-unnamed pickup will get the Wrangler's design cues and off-road chops.

The pickup is projected to be at U.S. dealerships in 2019. Production is scheduled for the current Jeep Wrangler line at FCA's Toledo, Ohio, assembly complex after the plant receives a new paint shop next year.

The pickup will follow the redesigned Wrangler SUV, which FCA plans to begin producing in November in Toledo. Both will feature a new fuel-efficient eight-speed automatic transmission and improved aerodynamics.

Most of the spy shots we've received of the Wrangler pickup have been from a bird's-eye perspective. However this time, one of our spy photographers got up close

» World's fastest Grand Cherokee SRT8 from Oz!!
Apr 30, 2017 - 11:24 PM - by Jimmyb
WORLD’S FASTEST JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE SRTSYDNEY bloke Mitch Stevens now has the fastest WK2 series Jeep Grand Cherokee in the world, running well into ten-second territory at Sydney Dragway last weekend.

AD Motorsportz in America who build some crazy turbo Jeeps previously held the world record for the 2014 and onwards Grand Cherokees with one of their built motor cars, but Mitch and the guys at Pure Motorworks in Sydney were able to do it on a stock engine!

His SRT Jeep runs the factory 6.4-litre Hemi V8 with stock headers running into a straight pipe and down to a Garrett GTX42 turbo mounted under the rear of the car. From there it has a dump pipe straight out the factory tailpipe, external wastegate and intake pipe back up to a front-mount intercooler and back into the engine.

Mitch has also upgraded from the factory fuel system to a larger in-tank pump and a set of 1300cc injectors, while

» Jeep JL Wrangler Mule Gets Pulled Over in Downtown L.A.!
Apr 30, 2017 - 11:23 PM - by Jimmyb

Jeep JL Wrangler Mule Gets Pulled Over in Downtown L.A.!aJeep enthusiasts everywhere are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new JL Wrangler, expected to hit showrooms sometime in 2018.

A few weeks ago, we brought you some conceptual renderings that we believe accurately capture the styling of the JL, which, unsurprisingly, looks very similar to the outgoing JK.

We just got these shots of a JL mule driving in downtown Los Angeles, which had the misfortune of being pulled over by L.A.’s finest, reportedly for running a red light.

Through the mesh covering the front grille, the pronounced kink in the grille as speculated by the JL Wrangler Forum is visible, as are the fender-mounted horizontal front driving lights/turn signals. Aside from that, the JL appears to be very much a Wrangler through and through, down to its boxy, upright body, body-on-frame construction, and front and rear live
